a 1997 federal law (Public law 105-147) that criminalizes that willful infringement of copyrighted works, including by electronic means, even when the infringing party derives no direct financial benefit from the infringement (such as when pirated software is freely distributed online).
Communications Decency Act (CDA)
a 1996 federal statute labeled Title 5 of the federal telecommunications act of 1996 (Public law 104-104, 110 stat. 56) that seeks to protect minors from harmful material on the internet and that criminalizes the knowing transmissin of obscene or indecent messages to any recipient under 18 years of age. In 1997, in Reno v. ACLu (521 U.S. 844), the U.S. Supreme Court found the bulk of the CDA to be unconstitutional, ruling that it contravenes First Amendment free speech guarantees.
