Terms in this set (41)
Related to Office 365, What are the containers that each organization (typically) has only one of and contains all their O365 content (PowerBI, Sharepoint, Exchange, Skype, Etc)?
When connecting to sharepoint from PowerBI, what was specific about the URL that we provided in the Get Data process?
Prompt for SITE URL (base URL), not the LIST URL.
Who can see "Datasets" within a PowerBI Workspace?
Admin and members you give access to and have shared with
What level of access is required to setup scheduled refresh for a dataset?
You have to be admin of the work space to schedule or do on-demand refresh
What is the authentication method when setting up credentials for SPO scheduled refresh?
Select "edit credentials" and change the method to OAUTH2 and hit sign in
Can anyone who is able to read the report also refresh the dataset on demand?
Your organization purchased premium capacity, how many refreshes per day would you expect that you can setup?
Using the MAD model, what type of metric is best for managers?
Contributing metrics, dimensional data
Which table in a star schema is "short and fat"
Which table in a star schema is "tall and skinny"
What file format are themes?
Where is M used?
Used in power query and query editor
Where is DAX used?
Used in microsoft SQL server analysis services (SSAS), power pivot in excel and PowerBI desktop
What does IaaS stand for?
Infrastructure as a Service
What is the mapping table called where we list the alternative names for a field that natural language query references?
Synonym. This is located in powerBI desktop in the "home ribbon", select the relationship model view, go to properties pane and click on general. Then write the list of alternative names for a field that natural language query references in the synonyms box
Can you subscribe others to PowerBI report and/or dashboards
What types of data can powerBI read from sharepoint?
How many rows does PowerBI assess by default to determine data type for a column?
What do we call the container within PowerBi where we upload reports and can enable sharing with others
Should the DAX filter expression for row level security equate to true or false for rows that you want hidden?
The expression should equate to false for rows you want hidden and true for the rows you want shown
**Which license is required to use the PowerBI mobile app?
Anyone with a subscription (free or pro) can use the mobile app.
How do you enable usage metrics?
In PowerBI Web, start in the "Workspace" that contains the dashboard or report that you want to see the Usage Metrics for. From either the dashboard or report itself, select the icon for "Usage metrics". PowerBI collects them automatically and we can view them anytime with that button
What are some frequently used data visualization tools?
PowerBI, Spotfire, Tableau, Splunk, GIS platforms
Which license would you recommend for a client who is very focused on data security and prefers to keep most of their data on premise?
What does "allexcept()" actually do?
Removes all context filters in the table except filters that have been applied to the specified columns
Why use measures vs built in aggregation capabilities?
Calculated column stores actual output which slows the data model and that it opens it up to individual interpretation and/or people using the summary functions incorrectly
Using measures makes it easier on people by:
• Finding the metric they want
• Not remembering how to filter or filtering "differently"
• Not having things change as a result of slicers
You have a dataset with a zipcode column, what might you want to consider about this numeric column when loading your data?
Numbers which represent things that aren't numeric (zip codes, phone numbers, student ID numbers, social security numbers etc) are typically better treated as a string because there isn't any meaningful math that you'd be doing with them
What are the prefixes for the tables used in a star schema?
Dim_ (short and fat dimensional tables)
and Fact_ (tall and skinny fact tables)
What is the most efficient data type to join on?
What does Unpivot do?
Turns columns into rows. Converts the data headers stored horizontally into a vertical format i.e. Power Query Column to Rows. The chosen columns are then split in two columns i.e. Attribute and Value
How did we describe good questions for interviewing our client?
Data wrangling: load/import
Review data: start to consider possible directions to go in the interview
Interview: determine the business problem you're there to solve
Review the data: with a lens of the business problems, look again at the data
Pick questions: make a list of the questions that you're able to answer and support solutions to the business problems you've been given
Build: make the dashboard/charts/graphs/
visualizations that support the answers to the problem
then summarize: go back to the list you created - answer the questions
and communicate: using the dashboard and your answers, prepare to share with the client what you found
Using natural language query, were we able to specify the visualization type we wanted? if so, how?
Yes, "as a pie chart" as a line chart
Why might you need a date table if your data already has dates in it?
Many to many relationship : If you have two tables both contain many duplicate date records and you want to create relationship between them, you should add a date table to link them
Get specify date between start date and end date : Sample: get the weekend from 2010 to 2015.
Use a slicer to filter multiple tables(contain date field)
Where are the roles setup for row level security?
Modeling tab --> Manage roles. (IN DEPTH: In PowerBI Desktop, Modeling Tab on the ribbon, select "Manage Roles" (near top right corner). Select "Create" and provide a name for the role. Select the table that you want to apply the DAX rule. Enter the DAX expression (make sure to validate the expression), select "Save")
Where are users assigned to specific roles for row level security?
You CAN'T assign users to a role within PowerBI Desktop. You must assign them in the PowerBI Service. Once Published on PowerBI Web, locate "DATASETS" and hover over the report you want to set RLS on then click on the ellipsis (three dots) and select "SECURITY" (the roles you previously added in PowerBI Desktop appear here). Select a role and add members/users to it. PowerBI WEB --> DATASET --> NAME --> SECURITY
Which license is required to use the powerBI mobile app?
Anyone with a subscription (free or pro) can use the mobile app.
Where can you copy and paste M language into if you found an example online? Or must you re-create every step by hand?
You can copy and paste M language into the query editor. On the "Home" tab of the ribbon you can paste your M language into the "Advanced Editor" or you can paste your code into the formula bar in the query editor
Can you share a single report with someone?
NO, you can't share a report with someone, we share workspaces with them. And if you share a workspace, they can see all Dashboards/Reports in that workspace. So, if you had a super-secret report that only your CEO and his leadership team would need to see, you'd need to publish that in a different workspace than the content that you wanted to share with everyone.
What is used in the event that you have data on-premise that you want to use PowerBI web to visualize and refresh?
A gateway (an enterprise data gateway)
How many metrics should ideally appear on a dashboard?
What were some resources we discussed to help pick the most appropriate type of visualization?
The visuals reference
The data viz catalog
