we listen everyday to a number of sounds and conversations.

not all our listening is exactly the same, different types of listening exist.
Three types of listening
informational listening,Empathic listening,Critical listening / evaluative
informational listening
you choose to listen, listen to gain information of some sort.
Empathic listening
you choose to listen, you try to understand and or solve a problem and help the speaker. (also usually pay special attention to the emotional tone of the speaker) expressed their dilemma in making a decision.
Critical listening / evaluative
choose to listen , try to understand speakers point of view (or angle) pay particular attention to detail.
When communicating with others we hope they are listening so our message can be delivered how we had hoped.
sometimes this does not happen and we are not aware that the receiver is not listening many times they are guilty of poor listening.
poor listening consist of:
pseudo listening, stage hogging, defensive listening, selective listening, Effort, message overload, Distracting sounds and noise, Environment.
pseudo listening
pretending to be attentive.
stage hogging
only interested in expressing their ideas.
defensive listening
a response style in which the receiver perceives a speakers comments as an attack.
selective listening
listening only to what interest you.
Effort
it takes the same amount or more effort to listen then it does to talk.
message overload
listening for 9-10 hours a day.
Distracting sounds and noise
cell phones, talking, etc.
Environment
bright lights, attractive person, unusually sights, or other stimuli.
Improve listing skills
be silent- let others speak until they are done before responding
Do not judge prematurely- draw conclusions after you have heard and understand what is being said.
