Modified Mercalli Scale
Measures an earthquake based upon damage and other effects of ground motion. This is not scientifically accurate but some have used it run on a scale of I to XII
The Richter Scale and the Moment Magnitude Scale measure an earthquake based upon the amount of energy released. This is more scientifically accurate and allows similar earthquakes to be compared worldwide.
Geological factors are also very significant
If these factors are known before an earthquake occurs, their influence can be predicted.
The type and length of the fault
Longer faults can have larger earthquakes no fault is long enough to generate and earthquake of magnitude greater then 10.
Reverse fault tend to have larger earthquakes due to the compressional stress that creates them.
