Abiotic Factors
a nonliving part of an ecosystem, including water, soil, and temperature
Biotic Factors
a living part of an ecosystem, including animals, plants, and fungi
Tundra
a cold, treeless biome of the far north
Taiga
a cold, forest biome of conifers in the upper Northern Hemisphere
Tropical Rainforest
a hot, humid biome near the equator, with much rainfall and a wide variety of life
Desert
a sandy or rocky biome, with little percipitation and little plant life
Grassland
also known as a prairie or savanna, a biome where grasses are the main plant life
Population
all the organisms of one species that live in an area at the same time
Habitat
the area in which an organism lives
Ecosystem
all the living and nonliving things in an area interacting with each other
Biome
one of Earth's large ecosystems, with its climate, soil, plants, and animals
Producer
organism that produces food and oxygen that animals need
Consumer
organism that cannot make its own food, eats plants or other animals
Scavenger
an animal that feeds on the remains of dead animals
Carnivore
an animal that eats other animals
Ominivore
an animal that eats both plants and animals
Herbivore
an animal that eats only plants
Community
all the populations living in an area
Niche
the role an organism has in its ecosystem
Limiting Factor
anything that controls the growth or survival of an organism or population
Ecology
the study of living things in their environment
Adaptation
a characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment, such as camouflage
Photosynthesis
the process in which plants use the sun's energy to make food
Food Chain
the path of energy in food from one organism to another
Food Web
the overlapping food chains in a community
Decomposer
breaks down dead organisms into useful things that enrich soil
Predator
a living thing that hunts other living things for food
Prey
a living thing that is hunted for food
Temperate Forest/ Deciduous Forest
a forest biome with many kinds of trees that lose their leaves each autumn (where we live)
