Key Concepts:
Terms in this set (74)
absolute value
distance a number is from 0 on the number line
area
number of squares of the same shape and size that covers a 2D shape without any gaps or overlaps
average
a measure of center of a data set; often calculated by finding a sum of all data points and dividing by the number of data points in the set
mean
a measure of center of a data set; often calculated by finding a sum of all data points and dividing by the number of data points in the set
base
can be used to describe a side of a parallelogram or triangle used in a relationship with a height
base
can be used to describe a face upon which a polyhedron can rest; used in naming a prism or pyramid
box plot
a way to visually represent data that has been divided into quadrants (four sections); shows the minimum, 1st quartile, median, 3rd quartile, and maximum of a data set
categorical data
data that has values of words instead of number
center
the value in the middle of a distribution of data; represents a typical value for the data set
coefficient
a factor that is multiplied by a variable
common factor
a number that divides evenly into two or more numbers being considered
common multiple
a shared product you can get from multiplying two or more numbers by another whole number (and not the same whole number factor for each number)
compose
to put together
cubed
synonym for "to the third power"; used because of how it is used with finding the volume of a cube
decompose
to take apart
dependent variable
a variable that is the result of a calculation
distribution
how many times a certain value occurs in a data set
dot plot
a visual way to represent data on a number line
double number line diagram
a pair of parallel number lines that show equivalent ratios
edge
straight side of a polygon
equivalent expressions
expressions that are always equal no matter what value is used for the variable in each
equivalent ratios
a ratio pair that remain equivalent in relationship when multiplied by the same factor
exponent
a shorthand way of indicating how many times to repeat the same multiplication calculation
face
a flat side of a polyhedron
frequency
how many times a data value occurs in a data set
greatest common factor
the largest whole number that divides evenly into both numbers
height
the shortest distance from the base to an opposite side or vertex as obtained by a perpendicular relationship with the base
histogram
a visual way to represent data by grouping ranges
independent variable
the variable used to calculate the value of another variable
interquartile range
the distance between the upper and lower quartiles in a data set; used to represent the spread of a data set
least common multiple
the smallest product you can get by multiplying two or more numbers by some whole number
long division
a condensed way to show the place-value steps for dividing number equally among groups
mean absolute deviation (MAD)
the average distance each data point is from the center
measure of center
a value that seems typical for a data distribution; mean and median are both this
median
the middle number when the data set is listed in order from least to greatest
meters per second
a unit for measuring speed
negative number
a number that is less than zero
net
a two-dimensional representation of all the faces of a polyhedron
numerical data
data values that are numbers
opposite
numbers that are the same distance from zero but on the opposite side of zero on the number line
opposite vertex
in a triangle, the one vertex that is not on the same side
pace
a description of travel; compares time to distance
parallelogram
a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides
per
"for each"
percent
"for each 100"
percentage
a rate per 100
polygon
a closed, two-dimensional shape with straight sides that do not cross each other
polyhedron
a closed, three-dimensional shape with flat sides
positive number
a number that is greater than zero
prism
a type of polyhedron that has two bases that are identical copies of each other
pyramid
a type of polyhedron that has one base with all other faces as triangles that meet at a single vertex
quadrant
a region of the coordinate plane
quadrilateral
polygon with four sides
quartile
one-fourth of the values in a data set; the numbers that divide data into four sections
range
the distance between the smallest and largest values in a data set
ratio
an association between two or more quantities
rational number
a fraction or the opposite of a fraction on the number line
region
the space inside of a shape
same rate
two situations that occur as equivalent ratios
sign
a symbol that indicates a number is either positive or negative
solution to an equation
a number that can be used in place of the variable to make the equation true
solution to an inequality
a number that can be used in place of the variable to an inequality true
speed
a way to describe how fast something is moving; compares distance to time
spread
how far apart the values are in a data set
squared
a synonym for "to the second power"; it comes from finding the area of a square
statistical question
can be answered by collecting data in a circumstance where there will be variability
surface area
the number of squares of the same size that would cover all the face of a polyhedron without any gaps or overlaps
table
a way to organize information into horizontal rows and vertical columns
tape diagram
a visual model using a group of rectangles to represent the relationship between quantities
unit price
the cost for one item or one unit of measure
unit rate
a rate per 1
variability
having different values
variable
