Terms in this set (24)
intensive property
a property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter
extensive property
a property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample
homogeneous
of the same kind
heterogeneous
different; dissimilar
chemistry is the study of the _____ and ______ of matter
properties and behavior
alpha particle
beta particle
gamma particle
+2
-1
0, no mass
CRT experiment
charge to mass ratio
Gold Foil Experiment
Conducted by Ernest Rutherford in which alpha particles that were shot at gold foil were deflected when they hit the positive center of gold atoms. The nucleus was discovered as a result of this experiment.
Oil Drop Experiment
A drop of oil was placed in a cylinder with negative and positive plates, the drops were charged using an x-ray. Different waves of xrays let the drops fall at different rates. Determined that the mass of the electron is 9.10 x 10^-28 by Robert Milikan
atomic number
number of protons
isotopic
same number of proton but different number of neutrons
Plum putting model
Thomson
atomic mass
proton plus neutrons
decomposition reaction
A chemical reaction that breaks down compounds into simpler products.
combustion reaction
a chemical reaction that occurs when a substance reacts with oxygen, releasing energy in the form of heat and light
displacement reaction
a reaction in which one element replaces a similar element in a compound
synthesis reaction
a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a new compound
theoretical yield
the maximum amount of product that can be produced from a given amount of reactant, found mathematically
percent yeild formula
(actual amount/ theoretical amount) X 100
Electrolytes are
substance that release ions in water
Oxidation
loss of electrons
reduction
gain of electrons
Enthalpy
the heat content of a system
Bohr Model
model of the atom in which electrons move rapidly around the nucleus in paths called orbits, modern atomic structure
