STUDY
PLAY
Force
A push or pull
spring scale
a tool used to measure force or weight
work
is force and motion, work only gets done when a force is used to move an object
machine
anything that makes work easier
inclined plane
a slanted surface which is sometimes called a ramp
wedge
simple machine that is two inclined planes joined together to form a sharp edge
lever
a simple machine, a bar resting on a point
screw
a simple machine, a winding inclined plane
wheel and axle
A simple machine that is a wheel that turns on a rod(axle)
pulley
a simple machine that is a wheel with a rope moving around it
fixed pulley
is a pulley that stays in place as the load moves
movable pulley
is a pulley that moves with the load
fulcrum
the turning point of the lever
load
the object being lifted or moved by a simple machine(what you need to lift)
friction
a force caused when one object rubs against another
name the six types of simple machines and their uses
inclined plane, lever, wedge, screw, pulley, & wheel and axle
How is friction helpful?
It can prevent slipping on a smooth surface, used to brake(stop), a bike, and can be used to start a fire.
How is friction problematic?
Too much friction makes heavy objects hard to move. Friction can cause things to wear away. For example, the soles of your shoes can wear away if you run/walk alot.
What two things do you need to do work?
force and motion
parts of a lever
load, lever, force, fulcrum
Why would someone go up a curved path rather than a straight steep path?
It would take more effort and energy to go up a steep path than to walk side to side on a curved path.
Why are things with large handles easier to use?
They are easier to hold.
