The Soviets built missile bases in Cuba because they wanted to boost the Soviet Union's power, threatening the U.S. with nuclear attack from the Caribbean. They also aimed to strengthen the Soviet Union in its attempts to force West Berlin to join East Germany. Other reasons included defending Cuba from American invasion. America set up a blockade around Cuba to take out all Soviet ships and by doing this, they were able to resolve the missile crisis.
