Describe the opening sequence in the first chapter of the story.
Taking place in the 1950s, a young man named Alexander, 24 years old, is walking between two rows of pinewood and carniferous trees. The smell of the fresh breeze perfumes the air. Alexander slows his pace down to take a deep breath and close his eyes. He listens as the breeze rustles through the trees, whispering a kind of message to him hidden to normal ears.
What stops Alexander from walking?
As Alexander is walking down a dirt path from the forest, he sees another man sitting tiredly alone next to a creek. As Alexander approaches the man, he begins to dig for something in his pocket. Staring like a deer in headlights, Alexander is frozen when he notices the man pulls a knife from his pocket. Instead of approaching him, Alexander begins to walk away in an adjacent direction.
What did the mysterious man do when Alexander began walking away?
He yells, "Hey!" Alexander turns around to see him waving jubilantly. Confused, Alex approaches him cautiously, saying in a questionable tone "Hello?" "I'm Nicholas! I saw you walking by and wanted to meet you." Still perplexed, Alex laughs hesitantly, responding with a curious "Okay?"
What do Alex and Nicholas talk about?
They talk about their lives living in Massachusetts. Nicholas came to the forest to get away from the Boston metropolis. Alex was there for soul-searching; he had broken up with his 4th girlfriend and was wondering what he was doing wrong. Nick jokingly implied that all girls are too emotional and don't make good mates. Alex laughs but sighs in disappointment. Nicholas cheers up Alex by offering to take him to get drinks at a nearby bar near the college towns.
What happens to Nicholas and Alex at the bar?
While they sit down to grab some drinks and talk, a man with a shotgun kicks the bar doors open and points the gun at the cashier. "Everybody down!" Robberies were common in this remote area of town near the colleges. Instead of reacting in fear, the bartender, still cleaning a dirty mug with a piece of cloth, says "Leave some money for the store. We don't need all of it but you can take some."
What is Alexander's response to the reaction of the bartender?
In another bewildered look, Alex is astonished by what he sees. After the thief begins to take money out of numerous drawers and a cash register, the bartender silently and unnoticeably grabs an iron pan and smacks the thief on his head. The punch left the thief unconscious on the floor. The bartender drags him out of the building and throws him on the sidewalk in front of the bar.
While Alexander is stunned at the bartender's response, what does he notice while looking around the room?
The bar had become silent. Everybody was staring at the person across from their table without saying a word. Frozen into position, their muscles did not move. Time seemingly froze, but Alex was unconvinced. He looked over at Nicholas perplexed, but he stares back with the intent of explaining the situation. Before he could, the bartender was staring at Nicholas in caution. He took the hint and stayed quiet.
What did Alexander say when nobody was talking in the bar?
"Why isn't anybody talk-" says Alex before Nicholas shoves his hand over his mouth. He whispers in Alexander's ear "they're listening... Don't make a sound." Not a moment later, men
