Quick rules for the Accents in Spanish
Terms in this set (10)
main rule #1: words that end with -a, -e, -i, -o, -u, -n, -s
For words that end in -a, -e, -i, -o, -u, -n, -s, the built-in stress is the next to last syllable. If a word with these endings is correctly spoken by stressing the next to last syllable, it does not require a written accent (it is vocally stressed but doesn't have a written accent since it follows the rule #1)
main rule #2: words that end with any consonant other than -n & -s
For words that end with any consonant other than -n & -s, the built-in stress is the last syllable. If a word with these endings is correctly spoken by stressing the last syllable, it does not require a written accent (because it follows the rule.)
The strong vowels are:
-a, -e, -o
when you have two strong vowels together (-a, -e, -o):
with two strong vowels (a, e, o), each vowel is pronounced as a separate sound (which means they count as separate syllables)
The weak vowels are:
When a weak vowel is together with a strong vowel and is blended into a single sound/syllable.
Sometimes a weak vowel is pronounced as if it were strong and will not be blended but rather stressed. Write the following word correctly according to where it gets stressed: dia
día (normally would be blended but this time the weak vowel is stressed, so it needs an accent)
When do you apply a written accent? For rule-breakers.
When a word is correctly spoken by stressing a vowel other than what it's ending requires, then that vowel needs a written accent (because the stress in that word is a rule-breaker.)
Sometimes we need an accent to differentiate meaning between 2 identical words. In this case, the accent has nothing to do with how the word sounds nor with its syllables. You have to memorize which word means what.
differentiation accents show a difference between identical words
Some words get an accent only because they are special. These are the interrogative words. (question words)
Interrogatives (question words) get accents because they are special, not because of how you say them.
