Fugitive Slave Law required runaways be returned North.
why did tubman have to take the runaways all the way to Canada instead of to a place in the north?
He threatened to return to the plantation.

people who helped runaway slaves were in danger
The fact that Tubman and the runaways were turned away from one house shows that
she led runaways though she knew she could be hanged.
What detail does the author include to characterize Tubman as courageous?
led enslaved people to freedom
Slave owners wanted to capture Harriet Tubman because she
Tubman was able to keep her identity hidden because sh called herself moses instead of her real name. This shows me that she kept her identity hidden because moses was a boy name and she was a girl. Also she told everyone to call her moses so the slaveholders wouldn't have any clue who this was. Another way is when she was arriving in the quarter she sang "go down moses" so they would know and she also make bird calls so the slaves would also know her presence and since bird calls was a natural thing she thought the slaves would think nothing of it , and they didn't . Overall this shows me how clever she was to keep her identity hidden just so the slaves could be free.
How was tubman able to keep her idenity hidden from salve owners.
One danger is the freezing cold conditions. When they were traveling the weather was very cold and especially traveling 10 to 20 miles a day in that weather could be very harsh on them if they didn't have a station to stop at. The cold conditions also would slow the slaves down because they would be too cold to walk and that would give the slave hunters better chance of catching them. Another danger is if they were caught they were whipped and if human was caught they would hang her. This could give the fugitives fear and it might slow them down or not be too careful because they are so scared.
What are two dangers runaways faced on their journeys to Canada.
