In each of the preceding examples, our steps in finding were: (a) Find the polar coordinates of the roots: Take the nth root of r and divide by n. (b) Make a sketch: Draw a circle of radius , plot the root with angle , and then plot the rest of the n roots around the circle equally spaced apart. Note that we have now essentially solved the problem. From the sketch you can see the approximate rectangular coordinates of the roots and check your answers in (c). Since this sketch is quick and easy to do, it is worthwhile even if you use a computer to do part (c). (c) Find the coordinates of the roots by one of the methods in the examples. If you are using a computer, you may want to make a computer plot of the roots which should be a perfected copy of your sketch in (b). Follow steps (a), (b), (c) above to find all the values of the indicated roots.
A truck was purchased 3 years ago for $45,000 and can be sold today for$24,000. The operating costs are $9000 per year, and it is expected to last 4 more years with a$5000 salvage value. A new truck, which will perform that same service, can be purchased for $50,000, and it will have a life of 10 years with operating costs of$28,000 per year and a $10,000 salvage value. The value that should be used as P for the presently owned vehicle in a replacement study is: (a)$45,000 (b) $5000 (c)$50,000 (d) $24,000
