Race
identity with a group of people who share a biological ancestor
Ethnicity
Identity with a group of people that share distinct physical and mental traits as a product of common heredity and cultural traditions.
Nationality
Identity with a group of people that share legal attachment and personal allegiance to a particular place as a result of being born there.
Ethnic enclave
place with a high concentration of an ethnic group that is distinct from those in surrounding areas
Segregation
Separation of people based on racial, ethnic, or other differences
Apartheid
legal separation of races into separate geographic areas in South Africa. Based on being one of the four races (Black, White, colored; mixed parents, asian).
Nationalism
Loyalty/devotion to a nation, has a sense that that nation is above all others.
Centripetal forces
Forces that tends to unify people and enhance support for a state. (e.g. the Olympics)
Centrifugal forces
Forces within a state that divide people (e.g ethnicity, religion, language, etc...)
Stateless Nation
A nationality that does not have a state (land) of their own (e.g.. Kurds, Palestinians)
Ethnic cleansing
Process in which more powerful ethnic group forcibly removes a less powerful one in order to create an ethnically homogeneous region
Genocide
Mass killing of a group in attempt to eliminate the entire group from existing entirely.
Ethnocentrism
the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one's own culture
Rwandan Genocide
occurred in the mid-1990s when the Hutu tribe tried to eliminate the Tutsi tribe. An estimated 800,000 Tutsis were killed.
Yugoslavian Genocide
Serbians attempted to ethnically cleanse Bosnian Muslims and Croats from their country.

A process by which banks draw lines on a map and refuse to lend money to purchase or improve property within the boundaries.
White flight
the move of white city-dwellers to the suburbs to escape the influx of minorities.
