Camouflage
a physical adaptation in which animals blend with or are hidden by their environment
Adaptations
a trait that helps an organism survive, reproduce and live in its environment. An example is lions have sharp teeth to adapt to eating meat.

Carnivore
An animal that eats only other animals; secondary consumers
Competition
the fight between two organisms to obtain the same resources in a habitat
Decomposer
an organism, such as fungi, bacteria or mushrooms, that break down the remains of dead organisms
Ecosystem
an area where living and non-living organisms interact in an environment
Food Chain
a path of matter and energy in a community; it starts with the sun and ends with a consumer
Food Web
a series of overlapping food chains
Herbivore
an animal that eats ONLY plants; primary consumers
Hibernation
an adaptation when an animals sleeps through the winter in order to survive

Behaviors and physical traits that animals are born with. The traits are passed from their parents through their genes

a behavior passes from parents through genes such as migration and hibernation

a worm-like stage in metamorphosis; example caterpillar

the part of a plant that makes the food
Learned behavior
a behavior that an animal or human must LEARN to do, example reading a book, learning to write, or an elephant learning to stand on a ball

insects and amphibians that go through complete changes during their life cycle such as frogs, butterflies and meal worms

when animals move from one place to another in order to survive, for example birds fly south in the winter in a group to avoid cold weather

An animal in the food chain that eats only plants

an organism that makes its own food and is part of the food chain
Pupa
a stage in metamorphosis between larva and adult

The process when organism's mate and ensure the survival of their species and create new organisms. Only adult animals can do this.
