Amino Acids: Absolute Configuration at Alpha Position
-Spatial organization of substit around alpha C.
-Distinguishes AA's 2 enantiomers
-3 naming conventions: R/S, D/L, and +/-
- D/L doesn't necessarily determine R/S
-For D/L, determine using Fischer projections (whether OH is on L or R). Carbonyl always on top for sugars and AA, R drawn on bottom, so H and NH3+ are the ones that swap.
-For AA, use amino grp as OH instead.
-Alpha C in AA = central C; first C attached to a funct grp (amino grp NH2 and carboxyl grp COOH)
-Chiral center in all AA except Gly (H R grp).
Vertical spine goes back, front horizontal chest comes out.
