The row of red buttons are your program bus whereas the row of green buttons are your preview bus. The program is what you are recording, preview is where you preview difference video sources.

You can use the take or Auto to move from preview to program.

What is the difference between Take and Auto?
Take cuts to the next source, instant swap between sources whereas Auto provides a transition like an dissolve to the next source (fade in to the camera in preview)

What do you use a DSK for and how do you access it?
You use DSKs to insert graphics over the background. The background layer is furthest from the audience which provides the visual base for the shot. Any layer on top of the background is "DOWNSTREAM"
How do you fade on DSK?
Just press Auto on switch because Auto dissolves (fade) to the next source which in this case is DSK.
What computer does the Tricaster uses? and Why is it important?
Tricaster operates on a PC (so windows!)
What are DDR1 and DDR2? How are they different from graphic 1 and graphic 2?
DDR1 and DDR2 are digital disk recorders. They allow you to store and play audio and video. Graphic 1 and 2 allow you to create text (these graphics can get assigned to DSKs). You can use the DSK to bring in and out a lower third.
Why do we white balance? Where can you find the white balance button on JVC?
White balance is used to reproduce the color white according to the color temperature of the light source. You can find the white balance button near the gain button the side of the camera. Must be in manual mode to white balance, can selected either A or B.

How do you format the SD card?
To format SD card, go to menu, select system then, media then format media. Once completed, select the appropriate card slot and when you press FORMAT, the formatting with start instantly. There will be NO warning.
what audio input does the JVC camera take?
JVC camera take XLR inputs, meaning you can plug your audio inputs directly into the camera. You do not need dual system recording to capture audio.
What is the difference between shutter speed and frame rate?
Shutter speed is the amount of time each FRAME is exposed to light whereas Frame rate is frames per second. For instance, shutter speed of 60 means 1/60th of a second. When the shutter is set at 1/60, it's open for less time than when it is set at 1/30.
Always shoot in HD video, NOT 4k video.
shooting in 4k video will create editing and storage issues that we don't need in this class.
How can F/Stop be used to decrease or increase depth of field?
F/Stop is the same as Iris or Aperture. F/stop is the focal size. Smaller aperture (f/16. f/22) means increase the depth of field which meaning wider aperture (f/2, f/1.4) decrease the depth of field
What does depth of field mean?
The zone of focus, from front to back,
Lower light requires wider aperture - gives you less depth of field ! The brighter the set, the greater the depth of field
If you are at F/22, is your iris open wide or close down?
The iris is close down. The larger the number the smaller the aperature (iris). Allowing less light!
If you are at F/2, is your iris open wide or close down?
The iris is wide open. More Light!
What focus assist does on the camera?
Avoid using AutoFocus (AF), use Manual Focus(MF) instead. The camera comes with an F.ASSIST/1 on the lens. This button enables focus assist feature that draws outlines around the images in sharp focus (creates a blue outline).
What is the rule of thirds?
The rule of thirds states that our eyes will be drawn to either "third line" of the frame, and that objects placed there will be at the center of our focus.
- frame is divided into 9 equal section (three across and three down)
How does the camera position suggests power relationships?
Camera position suggest power relationships by demonstrating who has the power or who is in charged based on camera angles or camera shots. There is a level of comfort in these shots and depicts how the audience should feel.

1) Camera at eye level of subject - Viewer & subject at equal level
2) Camera looks down on subject- Subject subordinate to camera/viewer
3) Camera looks up at subject - Subject in position of power
4) Canted angle - Subject is tilted in a way that creates tension or disorientation

Why are headphones used on shoots?
Headphones are used on shoots so you can review and hear your recordings. You can adjust the audio level of your headphone - Menu > A/V Set > Audio Set > Monitor - adjust the volume buttons on the side of the camera recorder
