1st Order of a Sentry
Take charge of this post and all government property in view.
2nd Order of a Sentry
Walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing.
3rd Order of a Sentry
Report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce.
4th Order of a Sentry
Repeat all calls from any post more distant from the guard house or quarterdeck than my own.
5th Order of a Sentry
Quit my post only when properly relieved.
6th Order of a Sentry
Receive, obey and pass on to the Sentry who relieves me of all orders from the commanding officer, commanding duty officer, officer of the deck and officers and petty officers of the watch only.
7th Order of a Sentry
Talk to no one except in the line of duty.
8th Order of a Sentry
Give the alarm in case of fire or disorder.
9th Order of a Sentry
Call the officer of the deck in any case not covered by instructions.
10th Order of a Sentry
Salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased.
11th Order of a Sentry
Be especially watchful at night and during the time for challenging, challenge all person on or near my post and allow no one to pass without proper authority.
Purpose of the 11 Orders of a Sentry
Many cadets do not know the purpose of the 11 orders of a sentry and think they are just something that we say to get our J-bar and a sign-off and are not aware that they are used throughout the military and are very important to know and I think it is important that all cadets know the purpose of them. The 11 general orders are orders that are given to what is called a "sentry", which is someone who is assigned to stand guard at a post and is given these orders to guard the post and keep it safe. Examples of when these orders will be used include: a Sentry that is assigned to a checkpoint at a military base, a recruit in boot camp or recruit training that is assigned to fire watch in the squad bay who will report to one of their recruit division commanders or drill instructors or a sailor or marine that is assigned to duty as the duty officer.

Meritorious Achievement Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any NJROTC cadet who distinguishes himself only by outstanding meritorious achievement or performance of a meritorious act. Excludes such things as length of participation
in the NJROTC unit or sustained superior performance in a leadership position. Awarded on a case-by-case basis by the Area Manager.
Distinguished Unit Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to cadets in good standing who were unit members during the academic year in which the school earned the Distinguished Unit status. Awarded to only those units that demonstrated the very highest levels of performance.
Distinguished Cadet Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to one cadet in each year group with the highest combined average for overall scholastic standing and aptitude in NJROTC unit activities (includes academics, homework, physical fitness, community service, drill, etc.).
Honor Cadet Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to one cadet in each year group with the highest overall academic achievement (GPA) in school, including the naval science courses.
Cadet Achievement Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet who distinguishes himself by outstanding achievement or sustained superior performance. The cadet must exhibit exceptional military aptitude and dedication to the program, as well as overall excellence in all facets of NJROTC. Awarded on a case-by-case basis by the Area Manager.
Unit Achievement Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to cadets in good standing who were unit members during the academic year in which the school earned the Unit Achievement status as determined by the Area Manager. Awarded only to those units that demonstrated exceptional performance but did not qualify for Distinguished Unit Status.
Aptitude Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to those outstanding cadets who demonstrate an exceptional military aptitude and dedication to the NJROTC program.
Naval Science 4 Outstanding Cadet Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 4 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance, and conduct.
Naval Science 3 Outstanding Cadet Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 3 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance, and conduct.
Naval Science 2 Outstanding Cadet Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 2 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance, and conduct.
Naval Science 1 Outstanding Cadet Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to outstanding cadets in Naval Science 1 based on citizenship, academic performance, personal appearance, and conduct.
Exemplary Conduct Ribbon
Awarded YEARLY to each cadet who demonstrates exemplary conduct for the school year.
Exemplary Personal Appearance Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to each cadet who displays exemplary personal appearance and has worn his uniform on all occasions required.
Physical Fitness Ribbon
Awarded, TWICE A YEAR, to any cadet who meets or exceeds the basic physical fitness exercise requirements as outlined in chapter 5 of this manual and the Cadet Reference Manual (CRM).
Participation Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet who has participated in three events other than routine unit activities.
Unit Service Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet who has demonstrated exemplary service and dedication to the unit as determined by the SNSI.
Community Service Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet in good standing who distinguishes himself by dedicated and outstanding service to the community.
Academic Team Award Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet who is a member in good standing of the academic team and has participated in three or more academic competitions.
Drill Team Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to each member of a drill team in good standing who has entered competition or performed at three or more official functions.
Color Guard Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to each member of a color guard in good standing who has entered competition or performed at three or more official functions.
Marksmanship Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet in good standing who has entered any competition.
Orienteering Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet in good standing who has entered any organized orienteering competition or who meets the orienteering qualification standards.
Inter-Service Competition Ribbon
*Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to any cadet in good standing who
has entered any inter-service national level competition, such as CyberPatriot, JLAB, etc.; or for any SeaPerch Competition, regardless of service sponsorship. This ribbon cannot be awarded in addition to, or in lieu of, another team-specific ribbon. For example, it cannot be awarded for competing in a local, area, or postal multi-service drill, academic, marksmanship, or orienteering meet.
Recruiting Ribbon
Awarded, WHEN EARNED, to a cadet who is instrumental in the enrollment of two students in the NJROTC program. Subsequent awards are given for each additional two students enrolled.
Leadership Training Ribbon
Awarded to any cadet upon satisfactory completion of Basic Leadership Training, Leadership Academy, or similar training as approved by the Area Manager.
Sea Cruise Ribbon
Awarded to any cadet upon completion of an at-sea cruise (vessel must cast off lines and be underway).
Lamp Devices
Worn on the honor cadet ribbon and physical fitness ribbon. For the honor cadet ribbon it is worn if the cadet has also achieved an "A" in the naval science class, NS1s receive a bronze lamp, NS2s receive a silver lamp and NS3s and NS4s receive a gold lamp. For the physical fitness ribbon it is worn to denote the level of achievement on the physical fitness test, a score of good will earn a bronze lamp, a score of excellent will earn a sliver lamp and a score of outstanding will earn a gold lamp.
Gold Anchor Device
Worn on the drill team ribbon, color guard ribbon, academic team ribbon, marksmanship ribbon, physical fitness ribbon and orienteering ribbon for the cadet that is assigned as the team commander for those teams and the commanding officer of the unit will wear it on the unit service ribbon. Ribbons with the gold anchor device will be moved to the wearers right side and above the name tag.
Subsequent Award Devices
Worn when an award has been earned more then once. For the second award you will receive one bronze star, for the third award you will receive two bronze stars, for the fourth award you will receive one silver star, for the fifth award you will receive two silver stars, for the sixth award you will receive one gold star, for the seventh award you will receive two gold stars and for the eight award you will receive three gold stars. No more than eight awards (including the original ribbon award) are authorized.
Torch Device
Cadets who have earned the right to wear the torch device under the requirements in the 10th Edition of the Cadet Field Manual are authorized to continue to wear it under the rules as set forth therein. No further awards of the torch device are authorized.
