Arthur's character has evolved, he can finally acknowledge the fact that he might not have been right all along and that the case might not be worth it. However, this does also show Arthur's preference for Catherine as it only when she might not get married that he doubts himself and not when taking Dickie out of school.

This portrays how most of the Winslow family is afraid of Arthur. He is in a position of power and authority, however at times Arthur is more gentle, for example with Catherine. Here he is hurt that his son Ronnie fears him, he wants to have a good relationship with his family members.

This portrays how the case has not only led to financial issues but has also taken a toll on Arthur's health, this may be caused by the stress and pressure he puts on himself to "clear his name"
