Sources of law in the EU:

Primary = Lisbon Treaty
Secondary = (include examples) Regulation - ergo omnes; legally binding act that is directly applicable to all member states. e.g. CFSP Directive - ergo ones; is binding only as to the results to be achieved, so member states have the choice of form and methods for achieving the results. e.g. Migration policies in GRE, ITA Decision - binding only upon those individuals or member states to which it is addressed. e.g. SME Initiative (on the model of funding agreement).

established the CJEU's right to decide a case, which overrules national courts.

Van Gend & Loos (1963)
principle of DIRECT EFFECT!!!
in cases where no additional legislative action is needed, an individual can defend his/her EU rights in a national court; don't need to wait for Member State to ratify the law.
