When Nixon first opened the door to China in 1972, the United States' primary objective in the relationship was to pit China against America's primary rival of the time, the Soviet Union, as part of America's Cold War policy. After the fall of the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, the Sino-American relationship entered uncharted territory. Summit meetings evolved between American and Chinese Executives from 1972 to 2004, meetings between these heads of government in multinational settings, leaders in these countries have been able to maintain bilateral meetings in this new global environment
