George III
Became king of Great Britain in 1760. Reasserted the powers of the crown. His government made policies that helped bring about the American Revolution.
Stamp Act
British law passed in 1765 by the British Parliament that imposed taxes on many everyday items like newspapers and pamphlets in the American colonies. Repealed by the British in 1766.
George Washington
Chosen to command the colonial forces in the American Revolution. Successfully overcame many challenges as commander which eventually led to his being chosen to be the first President of the United States.

James Madison

Benjamin Franklin
A philosopher, scientist, legislator, publisher and diplomat to France where he sought financial and military support for the American Revolution. Admired in France for his intellect and wit. Oldest delegate at the Constitutional Convention.
federal republic
A type of government created by the Constitution in which power is divided between the national, or federal, government and states.
