What is central fill?
Medication is prepared off-site; the prescription is dropped off at a pharmacy and picked-up in the same pharmacy but it is filled at a central facility that is closed to the public.

What is an exception to this rule?

What are the requirements for pharmacy security systems?
A device for detection of breaking and entering shall be installed in each prescription department in each pharmacy. It must be in working order and can ONLY be disarmed by the PHARMACIST working in the store.
This does not apply to pharmacies that are open 24 hours.
Who can have the door keys and alarm activation/deactivation codes?
Only pharmacists practicing at the pharmacy authorized by the PIC
What if there is some type of emergency and the owner needs to gets into the pharmacy?
The PIC may place a key and alarm access code in a sealed envelope and put it in a vault or safe in the store or other secured place; the owner could then get the envelope and the PIC would know that they have been in the pharmacy if the envelope has been open. The owner must return the key and alarm codes to the PIC after the emergency and the alarm codes will need to be changed.
If an institutional pharmacy is unattended by a pharmacist, what must occur
The PIC must make arrangements ahead of time for the provision of drugs to medical staff or other authorized personel by the use of night cabinents and in emergency circumstances, by access to the pharmacy. A pharmacist must be ON CALL during all abscenses.
What types of drugs should be in the night cabinents?
Only labeled, prepakaged drugs, in amounts needed for immediate therapeutic requirements can be in the night cabinent

What does the law say about prescriptions that you feel may contain an error or irregularity?
No pharmacist may compound or dispense a rx order which, in his judgment or professional opinion, contains any error, irregularity or ambiguity. The pharmacist must contact the prescriber before dispensing, if there is any doubt that the order is not legal, correct or issued for legitimate medical purposes. Pharmacists may dispense an emergency supply of life-sustaining medications to a patient without a prescription when the prescribing practitioner is not available.

Document everything including the reason for the emergency dispensing. Contact the prescriber ASAP after the drug is dispensed.
Who must have a WV Controlled Substances Permit?
