How do plants and animal cells differ
Terms in this set (37)
1.cells are the building blocks of all living things
. 2. all life pocesses take place in cells. growth and reproduction take place in the cells.
3 New cells are prosduces from existing cells.
what are some similarities of animal and plant cells?
cell membranes cytoplasm
what is the Nucleus
control center*. it directs all the activities that take place inside the cell.
the organisms genetic information
holds the cell material inside
stores nutrients and wastes
food and oxygen combine to release the food's energy, carbon dioxide and water. * this process is called respiration
a watery, jelly-like substance that fills the cell and contains odther parts.
surrounds the nucleaus and holds it together
what are the differences between plant and animal cells?
plant cells contain chloroplasts which make the plant"s food (sugar). this process is calles photosynthesis*
a plants cell also has a *cell wall, a stiff outer layer that surrounds and protects the cell and gives it shape
what is photosynthesis
the process by which plants change light energy from the sun, carbon dioxide and water to make sugar
what is a cell
A cell is the smallest part of any living thing.
what are the 4 different tissue types of a cell
what is epithelial tissue
your skin and the lining of your air passages
what is connective tissue
adds support and structure to the body Ex. bone, cartilage and fat cells
what is muscle tissue
is like elastic. its job is to contract and relax. There are 3 types of muscle tissue.
what is nerve tissue
nervers send messages to and from the brain and the spinal cord.
what is the skeletal muscle
moves the bones
what is the smooth muscle
involuntary movements such as breathing
what is the cardiac muscle
moves blood around the body
what is the defination of organ
structure that is made up of at least two types of tissues that work together to perform a specific job in the body. ex. lungs, hearts, liver
group of organs that work together to perform a specific function
examples of organ system
the digestive system
the integumentary system
describe the digestive system
uses several organs to process what you eat
describe the integumentary system
includes the skin, hair, and nails, which cover and protect the body
what is the shoot system
made up of 2 organs stems and leaves. they carry the nutrients throughout the plant.
plants have what 2 systems
root and shoot
inside of many plants are tissues called
xylem and phloem, which transport water and nutrients
what are some of the plants organs
roots, stems and leaves
what are Genes*
dna that control how you look
what 2 ways are new cells produced*
what is Mitosis*
body cells make more body cells. each cell in the organism follows 6 stages to form new cells that are identical to the original cell. a cell will copy the exact number of chromosomes and then split to form 2 new cells. each will have the same number of choromosomes as the parent
What is Meiosis*
Reproductive cells are produced. human body cells have 46 chromosoes. * Human reproductive cells have 23 chromosomes. when a female cell(egg) and a male cell (sperm) unite, they form a new cell with a complete set of 46 chromosomes.
what is a factor
informationfor a trait. every plant and animal have 2 factors for a chartacteristic. 1 from the female and 1 from the male
stronger trait that will show up in an organism even if only one factor is present
weaker trait that will show up in an organism only if no factor for the dominant trait is present.
show example of traits
BB or Bb brown eyes because the dominant trait is present
bb blue eyes becuase dominant trait is not present
