Pap smear

-examines teh cells of te cervix
-importnt for preventing cervicle cancer


-from the vagina, sperm travel thru the uterus and falopian tubes where fertilization occurs
-one sperm penetrates the egg and they join to form a zygote


-zygote travels down the fallopian tube towards teh uterus
-takes about 3-5 days
As the zygote moves down the tube, the cell divides into 2, and then into 4..ect


-first 8 weeks and embryo stage
- the embryo travels from the fallopian tube to the uterus


- ablood vessel rich organ that forms in a mother's uterus and that provides nutrients and oxygen and removes waste

First trimester

-first three months
-heart starts beating
leg and arm buds
-eyes and brain begin to develop
-surrounding the embryo is a membrane called amnion
-the embryo is connected to the placenta by the umbillical cord


- starts developing in 9th week

second trimester

-months 4-6
-sarts kicking
-distinctly male or female
-hair, head, facial features
-fingers and toes grow nails

Third trimester

-months 7-9
-when fetus gains most of its wait


-first stage of child birth
-the uterus contracts which causes the cervix to open up
-"water breaks"
-ends when cervix is opened 10 cm


-second stage
-the head emerges fullyand the shoulders rotate
-an episotomy may be done (cutting the vagina for more room)
- ends with the delivery of teh baby


- the third
-uterus expels teh placenta
