Herbert Blumer (1900-1987)
A symbolic Interactionist
Fine-tuning. No longer a macro-level study of rules, policies and procedures to... Micro-level study of interaction between people and how...shared meaning shapes those interactions and overall what people do, think, feel, etc.
The three tenets of SI: Herbert Blumer
1. People act toward "objects" (people, things, experiences) based on the meanings those objects have for them.
2. Meanings are created in interaction.
3. Meanings change by virtue of interaction.
In a nutshell: Shared meanings shape behavior, thoughts, feelings, etc. and are created in interaction.
Using SI to study inequality
How we think shapes what we do and how we think is based on meanings created in our interactions with others. We are not always aware that our thinking can be biased, that is, based on inaccurate information. Here, again our intentions don't always matter when it comes to reproducing inequality.
What ways of thinking can promote inequality
Establishing significant differences between humans and "others" perpetuates inequality. For example, "through no fault of their own, the Others are stupid and animal-like and thus prone to foolish and destructive behavior"
Definition of the [social] situation aka Thomas Theorem
If people define situations as real (and act on them), they are real in their consequences. This concept within SI overlaps with social constructionism in that it focuses on meaning and definition
How is power linked to definitions of reality
power in social life depends on getting the cooperation of others and being able to define reality thereby shaping people's emotions
