Starting with collapse of the US stock market in 1929, period of worldwide economic stagnation and depression. Heavy borrowing by European nations from USA during WW1 contributed to instability in European economies. Sharp declines in income and production as buying and selling slowed down. Widespread unemployment, countries raised tariffs to protect their industries. America stopped investing in Europe. Lead to loss of confidence that economies were self adjusting. Germany was effected by this Depression especially.This left Germany in a vulnerable state, in need of a strong leader.
A mindset that people of Jewish heritage were inferior to other races created in Germany by Hitler. Discriminated against Jews.
In 1923, after the war Germany went through a major economic depression. This was the result of war reparations under the Treaty of Versailles. When the German economy tried to print bills to pay off their debt, inflation rates of 40% a day.
The new German republic the in 1921 owed 33 billion annually to the allied reparations commission. In order to recover from its severe economic issues the annual fees were reduced each year depending on the level of German economic prosperity and Germany received large loans each year from the United States.
Hitler's rise to power
He became the leader of the Nazi party in Germany. He was arrested for treason, while in jail he wrote "Mein Kampf", Came to power during the depression when German economy collapsed and people became confused. Used propaganda and terror to get German people to follow his ideas. Looked to him for leadership. He gave Germany a scapegoat, the Jews, for the difficult times that they had. Became chancellor in January 1933, and passed the Enabling Act.
enabled Hitler to get rid of the Reichstag parliament and pass laws without reference to parliament, making him dictator.
Book writen by Hitler where he outlines his beliefs: Germans are a superior race, The Treaty of Versailles treated Germany unfairly and that a crowed Germany needed the lands of Eastern Europe and Russia. Appealed to many Germans, and helped Hitler gain popularity.

Outline, in detail, how Hitler rose to power and the methods he used to garner support in pivotal, influential areas of government?
The Nazi Party started out as a small German worker's party and were opposed to the Treaty of Versailles and Communism. Hitler joined this party, and using his charismatic speeches he soon became leader of the party. The Nazi party then came up with the 25 point program and tried to take part in a coup in Munich but failed. Hitler was then sent to prison for treason, but while in prison he published his book the Mein Kampf that highlighted his goals for Germany. Through the the Great Depression in 1929,Hitler gained his chance that allowed the Nazi's to gain support. Using the resentfulness of the Germans towards the Treaty of Versailles and the reparations, Hitler gained support and rose to Chancellor. With the weakness of the Weimar Republic, Hitler offered a solution for the depression.
What did Hitler add to "Totalitarianism"?
The totalitarian state that Adolf Hitler established in Germany included Hitler himself as chancellor, or head, of the German government. The government controlled the press, religion, and schools. He created a Fascist government that controlled every aspect in the German society.
How was the political structure designed to enable totalitarianism?
In the Reichstag, Hitler was able to exploit and control the different parties to help vote the Enabling Bill, which gave Hitler full dictatorial powers. 3/4 of the Reichstag had to vote yes on the bill, so Hitler made a deal with the Catholic Center Party to guarantee the rights of the Catholic Church if they agree to the bill.
