Purpose of Exodus
To record how the family of Jacob grew into a nation of millions- as God had promised and how God graciously delivered them form Egypt to brign them to the land- as he had promised.
Theme of Exodus; How does this relate to Christ?
Redemption; this is symbolic of salvation
1st 40 Years of Moses
1st 40 years: royalty- educated and raised in the house of Pharaoh.
2nd 40- murders Egyptian and escapes into the Midian- marries and becomes a shepard- burning bush
3rd- exodus and wilderness.
How did Moses respond to God at the burning bush? How did God respond to Moses?
Moses has 4 objections:
1. Who am I? 2. Who are you? 3. They will not believe me 4. I am not eloquent.
God says: "I am that I am"
Yahweh- first time (apparently, 6:2-4), God revealed his personal name. John 58-59
What were the targets and purposes of the various plagues leading up to the Exodus?
Nile River- "Nilus" worshipped by the Egyptians
Frogs- Hapi and Hekt, both fertility goddesses
Darkness- Ra, Amon-Ra, Aton, sun gods.
Death of the first-born- Ptah, god of life, and probably all gods.
What is the importance of the Passover/Exodus to Jews? What does this typify for Christians?
The Passover lamb is a type of Christ
The Exodus is the most significant event in the history of Israel.
What was established for the first time at Mt. Sinai/Horeb after the Exodus?
The nation of Israel began here. It was a "theocracy," which means "rule of God"
What was given by God as the basis for this (the "constitution")?
The Mosaic covenant or Torah given by God.
What 3 things does God say about Israel (19:5-6)? How does this relate to the NT church (1 Peter 2:9)?
"kingdom of Priests"
What are the parts of the tabernacle and what is the general and typical significance of each?
Most Holy Place- Ark of the Covenant placed here- only the high priest can enter here
Ark of the covenant- wooden chest covered with gold. In the box was the 10 commandments and a port of manna
Veil- separated most holy place from the holy place.
The Table of Bread- holds 12 loaves of bread made daily to symbolize God's abundant provision for Israel
Golden Lampstand- seven branches which was to provide light inside the Tabernacle and symbolized God as the light of revelation.
Altar of Incense- to represent the prayers of God's people.
Bronze altar- main altar which sacrifices were burnt
Bronze Basin- held water in order for the priests to cleanse themselves before priestly jobs
What does the book of Hebrews say about the tabernacle and everything in it?
Anticipates Jesus Christ- they were types of Christ who is our high priest.
What does Exodus 28-31 say about the priests? What was their responsibility? What do they typify?
Tribe of Levi; priestly family of Aaron
Responsibility: to represent God's people in the presence of God by presenting offerings to God.
Type: Christ; our high priest.
What happened in Exodus 32-34? What did God threaten to do about it? How did Moses respond?
Rebellion while Moses is on the mountain.
God threatens to "consume" them
Moses argues with God basing it on: 1. the reputation of God 2. Abrahamic covenant
What generally happened in Exodus 35-40? Where did the materials come from? What did God do (40:34)?
Tabernacle is constructed. materials gathered from the Egyptians.
