The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions.
The variable that you change on purpose (or, occasionally, a variable you observe changing, like time).
The variable that changes in response to changes in the independent variable; the result that you measure
The variables (usually there are many) that you want to keep the same so that they do not affect the dependent variable / change the outcome of your experiment.
