Initial response against infection or other "assault"
•Rapid (i.e. hours) and non-specific response
•Not due to prior sensitization or exposure to an antigen
First line of defense includes barriers, secretions & reflexes
•Physical barriers - skin, hair, fur, feathers, etc.
•Chemical secretions - mucous, tears, acidic secretions, etc.
•Reflexes - coughing, blinking, gagging, etc.
Second line of defense
•Recognition of basic foreign agents (double stranded RNA, bacterial cell wall, etc.)
•Fever & inflammation
Primary immune response involved in wound healing!
