John Brown - Radical abolitionist. Active in "Bleeding Kansas" during the massacre at Pottawatomie Creek where 5 people were killed in 1856. In 1859, he raided an arsenal at Harper's Ferry, VA (now WV) to gather guns to arm the slaves. He was caught by U.S. soldiers, led by Robert E. Lee. Brown was convicted of treason and hung.

Harriet Tubman - Leader on the Underground Railroad. Helped over 300 slaves escape to freedom in the North during the 1850's. She was referred to as "Moses." Sojourner Truth- Her real name was Isabelle Baumfree. She was a former slave from NY, who lectured against slavery.
