Cardiac tamponade/pericardial tamponade
Compression of the heart as the result of a build up of blood or other fluid in the pericardial sac, leading to decreased cardiac output.
Closed chest injury
And injury to the chest in which the skin is not broken, usually caused by blunt trauma.
Commotio cordis
A blunt chest injury caused by a sudden, direct blow to the chest that occurs only during the critical portion of a person's heartbeat.
Crepitus
A grating or grinding sensation caused by fractured bone ends or joints rubbing together.
Flail chest
A condition in which three or more ribs are fractured in two or more places or in association with a fracture of the sternum so that a segment of the chest wall is effectively detached from the rest of the thoracic cage.
Flutter valve
A one-way valve that allows air to leave the chest cavity but not return; formed by taping three sides of an occlusive dressing to the chest wall, leaving the fourth side opening as a valve; may also be part of a commercial vented occlusive dressing.
Hemopneumothorax
The accumulation of blood and air in the pleural space of the chest.
Hemothorax
A collection of blood in the pleural cavity.
Myocardial contusion
Bruising of the heart muscle.
Occlusive dressing
And airtight dressing that protects a wound from air and bacteria; a commercial vented version allows air to possibly escape from the chest, while an unvented dressing may be made of petroleum jelly based gauze, aluminum foil, or plastic.
Open chest injury
And injury to the chest in which the chest wall itself is penetrated by a fractured rib or, more frequently, by an extertal object such as a bullet or knife.
Open pneumothorax
And open or penetrating chest wall wound through which air passes during inspiration and expiration, creating a sucking sound; also referred to as a sucking chest wound
Paradoxical motion
The motion of the portion of the chest wall that is detached in a flail chest; the motion--in during inhalation, out during exhalation--is exactly the opposite of normal chest wall motion during breeding.
Pericardium
The fibrous sack that surrounds the heart.
Pneumothorax
And accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity.
Pulmonary contusion
Injury or bruising of lung tissue that results in hemorrhage.
Simple pneumothorax
Any pneumo-thorax that is free from significant physiologic changes and does not cause drastic changes in the vital signs of the patient.
Spontaneous pneumothorax
A pneumo-thorax that occurs when a weak area on the lung ruptures in the absence of major injury, allowing air to leak into the pleural space.
Sucking chest wound
And open or penetrating chest wall wound through which air passes during inspiration and expiration, creating a sucking sound. See also open pneumo-thorax.
Tachypnea
Rapid respirations.
Tension pneumothorax
An accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity that progressively increases pressure in the chest that interferes with cardiac function with potentially fatal results.
Traumatic asphyxia
A pattern of injuries scene after a severe force is applied to the chest, forcing blood from the great vessels back into the head and neck.

A plane electromagnetic wave traveling in the y-direction through vacuum is given by $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{E}}(x, y, z, t)=E_{0} \hat{\mathrm{i}} e^{i(k y-\omega t)}$. Determine an expression for the corresponding magnetic field of the electromagnetic wave. Draw a diagram showing $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{E}}_{0}, \overrightarrow{\mathrm{B}}_{0}$, and $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{k}}$, the propagation vector.

Why are lichens especially well adapted to play the role of pioneer organisms in an ecological succession?

For a certain type of steel, stress is always proportional to strain with Young's modulus as shown in Table The steel has the density listed for iron in Table It will fail by bending permanently if subjected to compressive stress greater than its yield strength $\sigma_y=400 \mathrm{MPa}$. A rod $80.0 \mathrm{~cm}$ long, made of this steel, is fired at $12.0 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}$ straight at a very hard wall, or at another identical rod moving in the opposite direction. (a) The speed of a onedimensional compressional wave moving along the rod is given by $\sqrt{Y / \rho}$, where $\rho$ is the density and $Y$ is Young's modulus for the rod. Calculate this speed. (b) After the front end of the rod hits the wall and stops, the back end of the rod keeps moving, as described by Newton's first law, until it is stopped by excess pressure in a sound wave moving back through the rod. How much time elapses before the back end of the rod receives the message that it should stop? (c) How far has the back end of the rod moved in this time? Find (d) the strain in the rod and (e) the stress. (f) If it is not to fail, show that the maximum impact speed a rod can have is given by the expression $\sigma_y / \sqrt{\rho Y}$
