1. Accommodation
The Liberal government has ended Ottawa's four-year fight against the wearing of the face veil during the citizenship oath, withdrawing a request to the Supreme Court to hear an appeal on the issue. "This is an act of kindness in favour of minorities," Ms. Ishaq, 29, said in an interview of the Liberals' decision to end the niqab fight. "It means they are showing their respect and honour towards the minorities. In the countries where the government shows respect for kind behaviour toward minorities, I believe the public does the same." Globe and Mail Nov 17, 2015

Cultural revitalization
The elders formed relationships with the young people as they taught them Ojibwemowin phrases, such as the often-heardambe(let's go), andgego(don't), along with being taught native names for plants and animals. "Wisdom is here," Thomas said. "Each child has a gift, we provided an opportunity. We provided a place for them; this is where they are from. Our youth will pick it up; we just have to give them the opportunity. This has been nothing but learning, all will go away with something, all will go away as better people." Ojibwe Language and Culture Camp for youth, 2014
Trade liberalization and the increasing opportunity through economic globalization
Recent decades have seen rapid growth of the world economy. This growth has been driven in part by the even faster rise in international trade. The growth in trade is in turn the result of both technological developments and concerted efforts to reduce trade barriers. Some developing countries have opened their own economies to take full advantage of the opportunities for economic development through trade, but many have not. Remaining trade barriers in industrial countries are concentrated in the agricultural products and labor-intensive manufactures in which developing countries have a comparative advantage. Further trade liberalization in these areas particularly, by both industrial and developing countries, would help the poorest escape from extreme poverty while also benefiting the industrial countries themselves. - International Monetary Fund

Marginalization of indigenous peoples
Christopher Columbus is a symbol, not of a man, but of imperialism . . . Imperialism and colonialism are not something that happened decades ago or generations ago, but they are still happening now with the exploitation of people . . . The kind of thing that took place long ago in which people were dispossessed from their land and forced out of subsistence economies and into market economies —those processes are still happening today. John Mohawk, Seneca author and educator, 1992

Global village and interdependence
The Global Village Revisited
We all live in the global village. We have a growing sense of the obsolescence of nations. Satellites make us instant witnesses to distant dramas. Massive amounts of goods flow across borders, as do huge numbers of people and great quantities of pollution. But if you think nations are dinosaurs, guess again. Just because people everywhere drink Coke and drive Toyotas doesn't mean we're all becoming the same. Nations aren't going out of business, if only because their identities — the peculiar mixture of history, culture, geography, social conditions, race, and religion — are so durable. —from The Economist Book of Vital Statistics

challenging people(s) to maintain their identity.
We should care about preventing the extinction of Native American languages because of the human costs to those most directly affected. The destruction of a language is the destruction of a rooted identity for both groups and individuals. Along with the accompanying loss of culture, language loss can destroy a sense of self-worth, limiting human potential and complicating efforts to solve other problems—such as poverty, family breakdown, school failure, and substance abuse.
