What is dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)?
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged, and is unable to pump blood efficiently throughout the body. Therefore, it is commonly described as a contractile or systolic dysfunction. This is the most common form of cardiomyopathy not due to ischemic causes.
What are the causes of dilated cardiomyopathy?
Although many cases are idiopathic, it is thought that dilated cardiomyopathy is related to damage of the myocardium produced by toxic, metabolic, or infectious agents. Common causes of dilated cardiomyopathy include chronic alcohol abuse, wet beriberi related to thiamine deficiency, coxsackie B infection, cocaine use, Chagas disease, doxorubicin toxicity, hemochromatosis and peripartum cardiomyopathy
What medication is used in dilated cardiomyopathy to decrease cardiac remodeling?
Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) are used in dilated cardiomyopathy to decrease cardiac remodeling
What medication is used in dilated cardiomyopathy to decrease the effects of excess catecholamines on the heart
Beta blockers are used in dilated cardiomyopathy to decrease the effects of excess catecholamines on the heart
Does dilated cardiomyopathy cause heart failure with systolic or diastolic dysfunction?
Dilated cardiomyopathy causes heart failure with systolic dysfunction?
Dilated cardiomyopathy is associated with an what heart sound?
Dilated cardiomyopathy is associated with an S3 heart sound
Chronic use of what recreational drug can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy?
Chronic cocaine use can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy
What is an S3 heart sound?
The third heart sound (S3), also known as the "ventricular gallop," occurs just after S2 when the mitral valve opens, allowing passive filling of the left ventricle. The S3 sound is actually produced by a large amount of blood striking a very compliant left ventricle.

Heart transplant and a left ventricular assist device can be used to treat dilated cardiomyopathy
How will dilated cardiomyopathy present on chest X-ray?
Dilated cardiomyopathy presents with a 'balloon' appearance of the heart on the chest X-ray
What class of medication may help in dilated cardiomyopathy by stimulating water excretion and decreasing preload?
Diuretics may help in dilated cardiomyopathy by stimulating water excretion and decreasing preload
