Apartheid
Translates to Apartness. A system of the South African government that was in place for second half of the 20th century. This policy legalized the second class social status of black citizens and enforced racial segregation.
Cultural Revolution
A movement that occurred in China, spurred by Mao's desire to even out chines society by eradicating the upper and lower classes. This led to much violence over many years, but did ultimately help the rural areas by providing more medical care and education.
Glasnost
Translates to Openness. This was a policy that began under Gorbachev's time as Secretary, which aimed to revamp communism in the Soviet Union by opening up restrictions on media.
Perestoika
Translates to Restructuring. One of Gorbachev's policies that aimed to revamp Soviet communism by changing the country's economic structure to allow it to flourish and meet the demand.
Stagflation
An economic period in America in the late 20th century which was characterized by a stagnant economy, high interest rates, and high prices. This led to a surge in overseas manufacturing and cutbacks in government spending.
Détente
Translates to release of tension. A period in history that began in the late 1960's and ended in fall of 1973. This period was characterized by the decrease in tension over nuclear attack between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The Dirty War
A period of brutal takeover by the military junta in Argentina. The junta 'disappeared' tens of thousands of people during their reign, those people being killed, imprisoned, and tortured.
