7th Grade Science: Weather 1-1 and 1-2 solar radiation and atmosphere

Science 7 Vocabulary for Weather modules 1 and 2 Heating of the Earth Atmosphere Air Pressure
STUDY
PLAY
barometer
instrument that measures air pressure
air pressure
the force of air molecules pushing on an area
Thermometer
instrument used to measure temperature
atmosphere
A mixture of gases that surrounds a planet or moon.
conduction
Energy is passed from atom to atom through direct contact
convection
The movement of molecules within fluids (i.e. liquids and gases) transporting both the molecules and the energy they contain
radiation
energy that is transmitted in the form of rays, waves, or particles and does not require a medium (matter) to travel
greenhouse effect
process by which atmospheric gases especially water, carbon dioxide and methane trap infrared radiation (heat) close to Earth's surface and prevent it from escaping into space.
troposphere
Bottom layer in the atmosphere (where we live an breathe); temperature decrease as you go up; exends from suface to 6 miles; where most weather occurs; PROTECTION: "greenhouse effect" warms the Earth
stratosphere
2nd layer of atmosphere; extends from 6 to 30 miles up; temperature increases; PROTECTION: location of ozone layer which absorbs 95% of harmful ultraviolet radiation
mesosphere
3rd layer of the atmosphere; extends from 31 - 50 miles up; temperature decreases to lowest point; PROTECTION: most meteoroids burn producing meteor trails of hot glowing gases
thermosphere
4th layer of the atmosphere; extends from 51 - 70 miles up; temperatures increase to 1,700 degrees C; PROTECTION: X-rays are absorbed
