A type of ammunition, said to be non-lethal, that can be used in guns as an alternative to traditional metal bullets. Although this ammunition is meant to avoid killing people, it can be extremely dangerous or deadly if it hits a person’s head. This ammunition is typically used by the police to disperse crowds of protesters.
This movement was conducted by Black Americans and their allies and gained prominence after World War II, from 1954–1968. It advocated for extending to Black Americans the rights enjoyed by white Americans, namely individual freedom, exercising their right to vote, and protection from discrimination. This was necessary because although civil rights were granted in 1868 to Black Americans through the 14th Amendment, Redeemer state governments in the South violated these rights for nearly a century. The activism of the Civil Rights Movement led to federal laws being passed to protect the freedoms of Black citizens of the United States.
War between South Vietnam and North Vietnam, fought between 1955 and 1975. Beginning in 1961, United States troops fought on the side of South Vietnam to contain communism. There were several significant implications of this conflict in which nearly 60,000 American soldiers were killed. An anti-war movement emerged, and massive protests took place aiming to convince government officials to end the war.
A novel, never-before-observed virus that emerged in the Wuhan district of China in 2019 and quickly spread across the world in 2020. Its name is an abbreviation for “coronavirus” and the year in which it was first identified. Coronaviruses such as COVID-19 cause contagious disease in humans, meaning it can spread from person to person. As of August 2020, COVID-19 has infected millions and killed hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world as it continues its rapid spread. Social distancing by staying six feet apart from others and avoiding crowded spaces is one of the most effective measures to prevent the spread of this disease. Considering this fact, it is significant that so many Americans feel compelled to come together to protest police brutality, when doing so may put their health and their lives at risk.
