Accent marks rules
Terms in this set (6)
Words ending in a vowel or the consonants -n or -s are stressed on the next-to-last syllable also called the penúltima sílaba. Se llama palabras llanas
Words ending in a consonant other than -n or -s are stressed on the final syllable. These words are called palabras agudas
In order to calculate the position of stress you have to understand the Spanish classification of vowels. The vowels a, e, o are considered strong vowels. The vowels i, u are considered weak vowels. When two strong vowels appear in succession, they constitute separate syllables.
When a strong and a weak vowel appear together they constitute a diphthong (un diptongo). A diphthong is a combination of two vowels pronounced in the same syllable. In diphthongs, the weak vowels i and u have the sound values /y/ and /w/. These diphthongs count as single vowels for the purpose of determining stress.
When a word violates one of the above rules of stress, a written accent mark is placed over the vowel of the stressed syllable. Words that end in a vowel or the consonants n or s but are not stressed on the penultimate syllable but instead on the final syllable or on the third-from-the-last syllable require a written accent mark to indicate this deviation from the rule. Words stressed on teh third-from-the-last syllable are called palabras esdrújulas - antepenultimate syllable.
When a strong and a weak vowel in succession are pronounced not as a diphthong but as two syllables, a written accent is placed over the weak vowel.
