What percentage of our cells is made of water? From an evolutionary perspective, why does it make sense that our cells are mostly water?
70-95% of our cells
Why do we care about the presence of water on other planets?
In order to see if life is suitable in other planets
What are four life supporting properties of water?
Cohesion of water molecules, water moderates temperature, ice floats on liquid water, the solvent of life
What is cohesion?
Attraction between molecules of the same substance
What is adhesion?
An attraction between molecules of different substances
What makes a water droplet drop?
What is example of Adhesion in water molecules do?
Water climbs up a tube
Why do cities on the coast have more moderate temperatures than inland cities?
Because cities in the coast are closer to a large body of water and water absorbs heat from warmer air and releases stored heat in cooler air
In a solution, what is the solute and what is the solvent?
The solvent is the substance doing the dissolving and the solute is the substance being dissolved
Ice floats on water. How did this contribute to the evolution of life?
Ice helps keep water beneath liquid. If ice sank we could not evolve.
What is an aqueous solution? What are two very important aqueous solutions?
A solution in which the solvent is water. Blood and spare important aqueous solutions
What property does hydrophilic substances have?
Substances that dissolve in water.
What property does hydrophobic substances have?
Substances that repel water.r
Are polar molecules hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
Are non polar molecules hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
What chemical properties determines whether a substance is hydrophilic or hydrophobic?
hydrophilic are ionic compounds and polar covalent compounds. Hydrophobic is covalent and non polar molecules
Does water dissolve polar or non polar substances?Explain
Polar because polar substances are hydrophilic which means it dissolves in water
What does PH measure?
the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution
What is the range of the PH scale ? Which region is acidic ? Which is basic?
The range of the PH scale is most acidic to basic . The yellow region is acidic and the blue region is basic
When a water molecule dissociates, what two ion are formed? Which ion is positively charged? Which ion is negatively charged?
The two molecules formed is a hydroxide ion and a hydrogen ion. The hydroxide ion (OH-) is negative and the hydrogen ion (H+) is positive.
What is an acid?
any compound that forms H+ ions in solution
What is a base?
a substance that reduces the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution
What effects do acids have on the PH of solutions?
Acids lower pH
What effects do bases have on the pH of solutions?
Bases raises pH
What is a buffer?
a substance that minimizes changes in pH
