What is an MI?
myocardio infarction; lipid and fibrous tissue within the coronary artery, stable or unstable plaque, if plaque ruptures there is an obstruction of the coronary artery which is a myocardial infarction

How does exercise and exercise training impact a person that has had an MI?
Increases max oxygen consumption, increases HR variability, decrease body weight, decreases IDL and increase HDL, improves psychosocial well being, protection from triggering another MI due to physical exertion.
What is the general management process for a person who suffered a MI?
Phase 1: bed rest or hospital, some sitting and standing
Phase 2-4: outpatient... walking, stairs, cycling, rhythmic exercise is the best, both set of limbs should get exercise, 3 days/week for 20-40 mins, encourage physical activity everyday
What is ischemia?
Obstruction of coronary arteries due to lack of blood flow and less oxygen to the body and weak cardiac function
Types of symptomatic angina.
stable: 70% blockage use nitrogen
unstable: rest or from sleep
variant: arterial spasms, CV condition
What are benefits of exercise training for a person who suffers from stable angina?
Good! behavioral change is a must, medication may enhance performance, reduces the severity of myocardial ischemia
What are implants?

contributes to optimal cardiac function, increase HR to meet metabolic demand, for treatment of arrhythmias, quality of life
When should implants be used?
When it can make the quality of life better. Useful when individuals have a history of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias.
Why is one type of implant referred to as a DDDR?
dual chambered paces, dual chambered sense, dual chambered inhibited response; paces and senses both the atrium and the ventricle, optimal pacing mode
What are the benefits of exercise testing after an implant is used?
Establishing upper training HR, program to improve function capacity, train to help reduce cardiac risk factors, improve psychosocial outcomes
What is a chronic heart problem?
heart can't deliver oxygen to body tissue, depressed systolic function, may show abnormal diastolic function, or a combo of both

Resting HR -- increase to 90-110/min; > at rest & during exercise

What are the ventilatory impairments associated with obstructive pulmonary disease?
Ventilatory impairments: airways are smaller therefore a lesser degree of oxygen obtained -- chronic bronchitis, asthma; Increased work of breathing; will have ventilatory: muscle weakness, inefficiency, fatigue, possible failure

What is chronic restrictive pulmonary disease?
inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs
What is a secondary disease associated with it? Why?
Hemodynamic and Cardiac Dysfunction -- any pathologic process that obliterates the pulmonary vascular bed increases pulmonary vascular resistance and right ventricular after load, resulting in a higher pulmonary artery pressure, right heart staring, and a lower stroke volume during exercise
What does EIA mean?
Exercise Induced Asthma
How does EIA relate to exercise?
usually has not effects to exercise when controlled; usually occurs within 5-15 min of exercise; coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort; asthma will stop the exercise
Why is it important to manage asthma?
If not controlled, it will stop the exercise
Is exercise beneficial to the asthma patient? If yes, why? If no, why not?
YES! It should improve fitness level which could reduce symptoms.
What are the effects of exercise response and training on the individual who has had a lung and/or heart/lung transplant?
patient usually has a higher spirometric reading; abnormal pulmonary function tests are common, a stable patient may show an appropriate response of ventilation to Pa, heart/lung patients may have a mild restrictive ventilatory defect
Why is it critical to know about the medication that a heart/lung transplant patient might be taking before implementing an exercise program?
Some medications may heighten the risk of developing opportunistic infection, malignancy, osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and associated toxicity
What is an aneurysm?
Localized dialtion or bulge of a blood vessel cuased by disease or weakening of an arterial vessel wall
Where is the most likely place to find an aneurysm?
Typically occur in arteries at the base of the brain and in the aortoiliac region
