Krashen, Stephen L.
University of Southern California/ is an expert in the field of linguistics especially in the theories of language acquisition and development. His theory of second language consists of 5 main hypotheses. 1. Acquisition learning hypothesis 2. monitor hypothesis 3. natural order hypothesis 4. input hypothesis 5. Affective filter hypothesis
This model of SLA has 5 underlying hypothesis including: Acquisition(subconscious child learning L1), Monitor (conscious learned knowledge edits L2 speech), Natural Order Hypothesis, Input (comprehensible input slightly above current level), Affective Filter Hypothesis
input should be slightly beyond students' current level (i+1) for acquisition to occur; pictures, gestures, tone of voice help make input comprehensible; frequently use key vocabulary words.
Krashen-mental block can be produced by negative factors such as anxiety, low motivation, self confidence
way of speaking and explaining that the students can understand (modeling, visuals, hands-on activities, demonstrations, gestures, body language
Language produced by learners which they have attempted to make understandable to listeners/readers.
support of learning allows students to complete tasks they are not able to complete independently
Communicative Language Teaching
Stressing the importance of language as a tool for communicating information and ideas through teaching
Natural Approach (Krashen & Terrell)
Based on 5 tenets: 1. Language acquisition (unconscious process) is different than language learning (conscious process); 2. Conscious learning acts only as a monitor or editor that checks or repairs the output of what has been acquired; 3. Grammatical structures are acquired in a predictable order; 4. People acquire language from messages just slightly beyond their current competence; 5. The learner's emotional state can act as a filter that impedes input.
Critical Pedagogy or Critical Literacy
The teacher listens to get to know the students and begins to dialogue, then moves to action. Through literacy and education, students are taught how to confront the forces in life that keep them passive and to challenge power structures in society.
(based on the work of Paulo Freire)
Rapid means of learning a foreign language (used my military). Patterns of drills and dialogue designed to develop grammatical structures and vocabulary in a highly sequential manner. Language acquisition as the memorization and recall of language patterns
refers to an overarching philosophy of SL instruction
refers to a set of procedures for delivering SL instruction
Content Based Instruction
Communicative approach led to content-based ESL instruction to prepare students for mainstream classes. Taught by ESL educators, Addresses key topics in grade-level curriculum, seeks to develop students' English proficiency through study of subject area content, and addresses academic skills
