Two categories: behavioral and experiential
What are experiential processes of change?
- consciousness raising
What are the behavioral processes of change?
What is MI?
a collaborative, goal-oriented conversation that seeks to strengthen a person's motivation and commitment to change
What are the four key interrelated elements of the spirit of MI?
What are the overlapping processes of MI?
What contributes to brief interventions?
there are 3 major factors that contribute to a patient's long-term compliance with treatment:
-the patient feels that behavior change is a personal choice
-the encounter between the patient and the provider is positive
-the patient has adequate self-confidence about his or her ability to make recommended behavior changes
-premature focus trap
when an interviewer turns the session into Q and A style, this can happen as a result of the interviewer trying to perform an intake assessment, harmful to the process because there isn't much room to explore motivation or move towards change talk
this can happen when you ask question after question as interviewer, gives the notion that if interviewer asks enough questions they will come up with solutions, but really the client is the expert on their life
Premature focus trap?
when focusing happens before engagement, interviewer jumps to solving problem before connecting or even coming up with common goals, instead interviewer should listen to client's stories, learn about their life and then come back to specific behavior
when interviewer wants to focus on a problem (premature focus) and calls it a specific name, MI de-emphasizes labeling unless the person wants to embrace a label
client can become defensive about blaming if not dealt with, in MI it is good to make a statement about judgement or pinpointing someone at fault is not the point of counseling
off topic chat can feel comfortable, but it isn't helpful in moving forward with the process
Eliciting change talk, types of change talk?
-desire for change
-ability to change
-reasons for change
-need for change
