In the following chemical equation for photosynthesis: Light + 6 CO2 + 12 H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6 H2O
o Identify which reactants and products are associated with the light reactions and carbon fixation reactions (the Calvin Cycle)
o Describe the function of each reactant and what each product is derived from
Light Reactions
Reactants: Light (energy) & exciting the (e-), H2O, donates H+ & (e-) to replace (e-) that got excited by protons
Products: O2
Carbon Fixation
Reactants: Carbon dioxide (CO2)
Products: Glucose + Water
Name products of the light reactions that are used as reactants in the Calvin Cycle
ATP + NADPH are products from the Light Rx that are used as reactants in the Calvin Cycle to produce sugar
Name products of the Calvin Cycle that are used as reactants in the light reaction
ADP + NADP are products of the Calvin Cycle that are used as reactants in the Light Rx
Identify where the light reactions and the Calvin Cycle occur in prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Prokaryotes: Takes place on internal membranes
Eukaryotes: Thylakoid disks of Chloroplasts
Describe the relationship between the wavelength of light, and the amount of energy it contains
E= hc/(wavelength): The shorter the wavelength, the greater the energy.
Describe a photosystem in terms of what type of macromolecule it is made of, and how its pigment is used to capture light energy
Photosystem: Consists of multiple light-harvesting complexes arranged around a reaction center. This is where light energy is converted to chemical energy. The antenna pigments capture light energy and send it to the reaction center chlorophyll, which uses it for the reactions of photosynthesis.
What macromolecule?
Describe the properties of the photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll in regards to the wavelengths (colors) of light it reflects, absorbs, and uses in photosynthesis
Chlorophyll: absorbs blue and red and reflects green
Wavelengths in which Photosynthesis is the highest, are the same wavelengths in which chlorophyll a absorbs light
Uses in photosynthesis?
Describe how pigments like carotenoids and phycobillins are used to compliment chlorophyll in absorbing light energy
Carotenoids: (Fall colors), absorbs blue and green and reflects yellow and orange
Phycobillins: Absorbs yellow-green to orange and reflects cyanobacteria & red algae
Compare and contrast the noncyclic and cyclic electron transport chains by identifying their inputs and products
Cyclic ETC: Produces ATP only
Non-cylic ETC: Produced NADPH & ATP
For the stages of 1) Carbon Fixation, 2) Sugar Production, and 3) Regeneration of RuBP in the Calvin Cycle, identify which stage(s) use CO2, ATP, and/or NADPH.
1) Carbon Fixation: CO2 is added to ribulose 1,5 biphosphate (RuBP)
2) Sugar Production:
3) Regeneration of RuBP: The CO2 acceptor, RuBP, is regenerated from G3P
Name the reactants, products, and enzyme involved in the first reaction in the Carbon Fixation phase of the Calvin Cycle.
The reactant involved in the 1st reaction in the Carbon Fixation phase of the Calvin Cycle is RuBP
Products: CO2 & 3PG
Enzyme: Rubisco
Name the stage of the Calvin Cycle in which glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) is created, and the products it can be converted into
G3P is created in the 2nd stage, Reduction and sugar production. The products it can be converted into are ...
