Function of the kidneys
-removal of metabolic wastes from the blood and excretion to the outside of the body
-regulation of red blood cell production, blood pressure, calcium ion absorption, and the volume, composition, and pH of the blood
Wastes include nitrogenous and sulfur containing products of protein metabolism
pH is the
control of hydrogen ions
blood volume is controlled by
regulation of water-reabsorption (more or less water), renin-angiotensin-aldosterone pathway
Blood pressure is regulated by
volume/pressure relationships, renin, angiotensinogen, angiotensin I, angiotensin II, & aldosterone
kidney releases of 2 hormones
calcitrol & erythropoietin
Erythropoietin is the
control RBC production
Activates Vitamin D to
regulate absorption of calcium
