What is Bode's Law?
Where was Bode's law not accurate in 1800?
Bode's law led to the discovery of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter in 1801
What does not fit with Bode's law? When was this found?
Neptune was found in 1846 and does not follow Bode's law.
Why we're they not able to find the rotational rate of Venus until the mid 20th century?
Because of Venus' very dense atmosphere they were unable to visably observe the surface until the 1960s
What method did they use to find the rotational speed of Venus?
They used RADAR, or RAdio Detection And Ranging, by bouncing radio waves of the surface and measuring the doppler shift
Name two major features on the surface of Mars
Olympus Mons a volcano over 3 times the size of mount everest and Valles Marineris which is equivalent to a USA sized grand canyon.
Name four probes that landed on Mars before 2012
Viking 1 and 2, Sojourner and Pathfinder, Spirit, and Opportunity
You are in a spacecraft that is slowly descending into Jupiter. Describe the experience.
First you would encounter a ring system made up of frozen chunks of gas such as ammonia, methane, and water. The next thing you would find is a thick gaseous region made mostly of hydrogen along with pockets of crystal gas whose pressure and temperature far exceed that of earth. As you descend the temperature hydrogen with trace amounts of helium a solid core made up of heavy elements such as iron oxygen and carbon.
What planet does Io orbit and what makes it so interesting?
Io orbits Jupiter and is interesting because it has volcanic activity
What planet does Titan orbit and what makes it so interesting?
Titan orbits Saturn and is interesting because it has an atmosphere that is over 3 times as thick as Earth's
What planet does Europa orbit and what makes it so interesting?
Europa orbits Jupiter and is interesting because we think there is a large deep water ocean under its icy crust
What planet does Enceladus orbit and what makes it so interesting?
Enceladus orbits Saturn and is interesting because it has water geysers on the surface creating the "tiger striping"
What moon(s) is bigger than Mercury?
Name one strange thing about Neptune?
Name one strange thing about one of Neptune's moons?
Name one strange thing about Pluto?
