What are two goals O'Brien had in writing the novel?
1) to illustrate the complexity of telling a true war story
2) to relieve himself of the traumas of war by putting it into writing and sharing with readers
Does O'Brien include facts and data? Explain why it is logos.
Yes. He uses logos when he described the things that soldiers physically carried, like grenades and guns, and when he talks about the real things of war. This appeal to logos uses facts and statistics of the war to explain how the war worked and what went on during it.
Does O'Brien use pathos? How and give example? (What strategies does he use?)
Yes. When O'Brien tells the story of when he went back to visit the spot where Kiowa years after the war had died, he invokes the use of pathos. First off, in his use of storytelling, O'Brien uses pathos to induce emotion. Then, O'Brien goes on to talk about how he was full of remorse. In showing his own emotion, he invokes emotion of of the readers. O'Brien uses storytelling and visual imagery very well to make an appeal to pathos.
