Set
a group of numbers, variables written in set braces
Element
a number, letter, point, line, or any other object contained in a set
Members
set is any one of the distinct objects that make up that set.
Undefined
an expression in math which does not have meaning and so which is not assigned
Descriptions
...
Roster Method
arranged in a table or systematic arrangement by columns, rows
Set Builder Notation
a mathematical shorthand for precisely stating all numbers of a specific set that possess a specific property
Empty Set
set containing no elements
Null Set
a set that is negligible in some sense
∈
element
∉
not an element
Natural Number
the positive integers (whole numbers) 1, 2, 3, etc., and sometimes zero as well.
Cardinal Number
a number denoting quantity (one, two, three, etc.), as opposed to an ordinal number (first, second, third, etc.).
Equivalent Sets
Having the same value.
One to One Correspondence
function between the elements of two sets, where every element of one set is paired with exactly one element of the other set, and every element of the other set is paired with exactly one element of the first set.
Finite Set
set that has a finite number of elements.
Infinite Set
a set that is not a finite set
Equal Sets
have exactly the same members
Subsets
set of which all the elements are contained in another set.
Proper Subset
a set is a subset of that is not equal to
Number Of Subsets
set if all elements of the set are elements of the set
Venn Diagram
sets are represented by shapes; usually circles or ovals. The elements of a set are labelled within the circle
Universal Set
set of all elements under consideration, denoted by capital U.
Disjointed Set
they have no element in common
Common Elements
sets have at least one element in common
Compliment of a set
he set of elements of the universal set that are not elements of A
Intersection Of Sets
the set that contains all elements of A that also belong to B (or equivalently, all elements of B that also belong to A), but no other elements.
Union Of Sets
the collection of points which are in A or in B or in both A and B.
Or
refers to the union of sets
And
refers to the intersection of sets
Cardinal Number Formula
n (A U B) = n (A) + n (B) - n (A ∩ B)
DeMorgans Law
(A ∩ B)' = A' U B'
(A U B)' = A' ∩ B'
