Describe the differences between the process of necrosis and apoptosis in regards to when/why cells die, how they die, the reaction of surrounding tissue, and how these remains of these dead cells are "cleaned up" afterwards
Process of Cell Death
A. Necrosis - untimely death of a cell
e.g. If the cell is starved in nutrients, oxygen, etc.
When: Bad
How: Lysis (Burst)
Reaction: Inflammation
Clean up: White Blood Cells
B. Apoptosis - the cell is programmed to die in an orderly fashion
When: Good
How: Blebs
Reaction: No inflammation
Clean up: Phagocytosis by surrounding cells
Describe the difference between a malignant tumor and a benign tumor, and the difference between chemotherapy and radiation treatments in battling cancer
A. Tumors
Malignant tumor - dividing cells can end up in different parts of the body
Benign tumor- Cells that grow where they originated
B. Treatments
Chemotherapy- Injecting patient with toxins
Radiation- Targeted beams of radiation are used to destroy targeted cancerous cells
Describe the relationship between proto-oncogenes and oncogenes, and give 3 ways oncogenes can cause cells to grow uncontrolled
Proto-oncogenes - Create proteins that stimulate cell growth by 1) Growth factors 2) Cell receptors of growth factors 3) Stimulate acceptance of growth factors
