Cell Organelles

STUDY
PLAY
Nucleolus
Contained within the nucleus, site of ribosome production
Cell membrane
Surrounds the cell, helps control what enters and exits, made of phospholipids and contains proteins
Nucleus
Controls cellular activity, contains the cell's genetic information
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)
Helps create and transports lipids and steroids, connected to outer layer of nucleus
Mitochondria
Location of cellular respiration (convert sugar into ATP in the presence of oxygen); has an inner and outer membrane
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
Helps create and transports proteins, connected to outer layer of nucleus
Cytoplasm
Gel-like substance that holds other cell organelles
Cytoskeleton
Helps change and maintain cells shape, seperates chromosomes during cell division; composed of microtubules, microfilaments, intermediate fibers
Cilia
shorter hair-like structures that aid in cell movement
Flagella
longer hair-like structures that aid in cell movement
Cell Wall
rigid layer of complext carbohydrates outside the plasma membrate; found in plant, fungi, and bacteria
Chloroplast
Location of photosynthesis
Vacuoles
Fluid filled sacs found in all plant and fungi and some animal and bacterial cells, may be used for storage or cellular support
