Biochemistry Test Review
This is for the Test Review 11/6 for Biology. A collaborative effort between Joshua Franco and Drake Fernandes.
Terms in this set (40)
the amount of energy that needs to be absorbed for a chemical reaction to start
the smallest base of matter
a substance that decreases the activation energy needed to start a chemical reaction
a substance made of atoms of different elements bonded together in a certain ratio
forms when atoms share a pair of electrons to form a molecule
a molecule formed by the covalent bonds of different elements
negative charge, found outside nucleus; involved in bonding
a pure substance made of only one kind of atom
catalysts for chemical reactions in living things
an atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons
formed between positive and negative ions
a bond of different elements that consists of ions
a group of atoms bonded together
subunit of a larger molecule
neutral charge, found in nucleus
large molecule made up of monomers
substance MADE during chemical reaction
positive charge, found in nucleus, identifies element
substance CHANGED during chemical reaction
a substance on which a enzyme reacts upon
the attraction of molecules of different substances, in water's cause it can stick to other polar substances
a substance that solutes dissolve in and that is of the highest concentration in the solution
the attraction of molecules of the same substance. In the case of water it is very sticky and so it coheres to itself a lot
a scale used to measure how acidic or basic a substance is
high specific heat
more energy to increase the temperature
an attraction between slightly positive hydrogen and slightly negative atom
used for breaking them down for chemical energy.
a polymer made of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. it folds into specific structure depending on the bonds of the amino acids
a source of usable energy upon broken down and a part of cells structure
instructions to build proteins
simple sugars that are the basic carbohydrates
these are made when two sugars are bonded together
these are many glucose molecules linked together, which are the polymers of monosaccharides
structure nonpolar fatty acid tails and a polar head that has a phosphate group
a molecule of glycerol and three fatty acids
What molecules end with -ase?
What molecules end with -ose?
How do you read a Periodic Table?
At the top of the table there is numbers that are called groups. They tell you how many valence electrons the element has. In 2 digit numbers the last digit is the valence electrons. On the left hand side of the table the numbers are called periods. They tell you how many energy levels each row has.
How to read a element on the periodic table?
The letter on a element is its abbreviation. The number above the letter(Atomic number) tells you how many protons and neutrons there are in the element. The number below the abbreviation is the atomic mass which is the average mass of the elements isotopes. The color of each element tells you if it is a metal or a non metal based on the key
Structure, function, examples of and factors that effect enzymes
The structure of an enzyme is specific so that it can help substrates(reactants) bind or break apart. The function of an enzyme is to catalyze/speed up chemical reactions(It lowers the activation energy) . An example of enzymes are amylase(breaks up amylase into simple sugars and lactase(breaks down lactose). Some factors that affect enzymes are pH and temperature. If the environment is too harsh for an enzyme then if will deform and become useless.
